FINALLY! Praise the Lord, there are no more conform error warnings. Whew, that took a little bit of doing. So what I had to do was go in and replace all 39 pieces of detached audio at 23.98 with original files so that they matched the project properties of 24. Also removed 23 instances of retiming because I don't want the slightest hint of audio sync problems. Hope my sound guy is happy with this file!

Update:
Nope, the Automatic Speed did not work. I exported the XML, and then ran it through X2Pro to try and get my AAF, and it still spits out conform warnings/errors on those same 39 spots. Automatic Speed apparently did nothing helpful to my situation.

Will have to try going through Cinema Tools per the similar issues noted in this conversation: forums.creativecow.net/thread/344/28007

I really appreciate you helping me to get through this. I think we are getting closer to the solution.

I went through and located every single clip using the numbers you gave with conform warnings. I see that they are all 23.98. This project is set at 24. So yep, that's definitely the issue. Trying to fix it is the challenge. I applied a Automatic Speed retiming which is supposed to force the clips to conform to the project settings, but worried that X2Pro might reject that?

If so, I will either have to reimport and reconnect just the detached audio portions, or try to run all the original media thru Cinema Tools or something like that and convert 23.98 to 24. Hopefully this will work. Whew, this has been a logistical challenge!

The project is 24 fps and the clip is 23.98 so the clip will be conformed to match the project from 23.98 to 24 fps.

This means that the clip will play at 99.9% speed (slower) than it was recorded in FCP X, which in turn means that the clip will play 100.1% speed (faster) in Pro Tools than it will in FCP X because Pro Tools will play it at the original speed that it was recorded at. This speed difference would mean that for a 15 second shot, the audio will be out of sync by 15 milliseconds (about a third of a frame) at the end of the shot.

I really don't know how you would "fix" this because I don't know why the audio has been conformed in the first place. Should the audio really be conformed like this? If none of the video clips are conformed now, it would seem strange that the audio is. If the audio shouldn't be conformed, can you just replace the synchronised audio with the non-synchronised audio?

The clip you are talking about ("1D-2 - Synchronised Clip") doesn't have a conform applied to it according to the fcpxml which is why X2Pro is not warning about it. I don't know why this clip is not conformed and some other similar clips are.

Ok, so this is helpful. It helps me identify what the problems are.

But how do I fix the problem. When you say "The whole synchronised clip has been conformed." do you mean that FCPX is conforming a 23.98 clip to 24 or vice versa? If it is conformed one way or the other, how do I know which way it will be conformed? And How would I fix the audio rate that shows up as 23.98 if all the video clips above it are 24?


Also, X2Pro appears to be inconsistent or something, because I see in my timeline at :00:33:00 a clip called "1D-2 Synchronized Clip" and you can see from the screenshot I attached that over in the upper right hand corner, clip info, video frame rate says it is 23.98! And this clip is not connected to any video. So why did X2Pro not say anything about that clip?

Sorry, I didn't see your last post where you attached it.

There are still 39 conforms in this fcpxml which is why X2Pro is still mentioning then in the conversion report (you can see this for yourself by opening the fcpxml in TextEdit and searching for <conform-rate srcFrameRate="23.98"/>; textedit will show that there are 39 instances.)

They are likely all the same, so I'll look at the first one at 00:04:40.62:
".62" is a fraction of a second, not a frame. It's roughly 15 frames, so on FCP X it will be around 00:04:40:15. At this point, there is a clip called "10E-1 - Synchronized Clip" which is a synchronised clip that contains audio from two sources, one called "SCN10E_813_mono1" (which is used in the project) and one called "10E-1" which is muted in the project, but which the inspector shows as having a frame rate of 23.98. The whole synchronised clip has been conformed.

...and the second one at 00:05:12.73:
which is a different section of exactly the same synchronised clip

...and the third one at 00:05:22.38:
which is a different synchronised clip, but with exactly the same problem

At least this time there were a lot less conform errors/warnings. But I don't understand why I'm still getting these. All the clips in the timeline are 24p clips now. I've spent over a week making sure that was so. And when I go to the "The Conform rate at such and such a time has been ignored." there is nothing there. What do these references mean? Is that timecode, my timecode burn in? For instance, the first one is 01:04:49.23 and I've attached a screenshot to show my timecode and the clip at 24p.

My number one concern is am I still going to get drift in my audio? The timeline is set to 24p, and All the video clips frame rate are at 24p, but the detached audio clips down below say 23.98. Why? Shouldn't all these audio be 24p? What process does X2Pro use to read and then record to AAF? Is it looking at the frame rate for video clips, or audio clips?

If there are any clips that are retimed in your project in FCP X, X2Pro will ignore that retiming and will put the clip in the AAF at the original speed.

The in point of the clip would be correct, and the duration of that clip in the timeline will be the right length (with one exception, explained in the next paragraph), but the audio will be at the original speed so it will go gradually out of sync. Because the duration of the clip is not altered, all clips that come after this in the timeline will start at the correct point, so it won't affect the sync of other clips.

If the clip is slowed down in the project and there is not enough handle on the end of the source clip to make it the full duration in the AAF when playing at the original speed, the duration will be shortened and a gap will be inserted to cover the duration of the missing section of the clip. This means that any clips that come after it will still be in the correct place on the timeline.

If you want the audio in the AAF to all be the exact speed of the audio in FCP X then there must be no retiming used (all clips must be 100% speed), but the X2Pro conversion report (which can be copied and pasted into a text document) details any retiming effects that were ignored, so instead of removing any retime effects, you could pass the conversion report to the sounds people, along with the AAF, and they should be able to apply the retimes in their audio tool.

I have rebuilt my timeline and am making all the clips conform to same frame rate, but I still have a question on clips with retiming. How does X2Pro handle that? Do I need to go through and remove the retiming, making clips 100% instead of 80 or 60% speed? Would that throw the audio off in the AAF? I don't want any drift at all.

Hi Paul,

The AAF file should be fine; those messages are just warnings, not errors.

The conform rate warnings are probably where you have used clips with a frame rate that are close to, but not exactly the same as your project frame rate.

When you use a 25 fps clip on a 23.98 fps project, instead of doing a frame rate conversion where some frames are skipped or duplicated (which it does for clips where the frame rate is considerably different like 25/29.97), FCP X will just play the clips out at a different speed to what they were recorded at. In the case of a 25/23.98 mismatch it will play the clips at either 104% or 96% of the original speed.

This is a form of "retiming" which X2Pro does not support because it only extracts the audio from the clips; it doesn't do any kind of processing to the audio (unless it isn't PCM audio, and even then it will only convert it to to PCM).

X2Pro will include the audio from these conformed clips in the AAF, but they will play at the originally recorded speed, so they may go slowly out of sync with the video. The editor may be able to compensate for this by speeding up or slowing down the clips that are mentioned in the report.
