Jeremy was just trying to find out why you were trying to reference audio because for most users, it isn't a particularly useful option, and can complicate things. That is why the default option is to embed audio rather than referencing it.

jeansemeur wrote: The conclusion is the option to reference wav files won't work for 90% of recorder files and 100% of footage from caméra.
Can you confirm that this option has no interest in most of the case (footage has 2 channels or more, recorders records 2 chanels or more, musique is stéréo !!!) ?
Can you give me only ONE concret case where this option is useful ?!

You are correct; the option to reference WAV files will only be useful for users with a specific workflow; for example where audio is recorded externally to the camera and is then synced to the video.

X2Pro does come with a help feature which explains how each feature/option works, and there is also the knowledge base, which you are already aware of. If users need more help we are happy to support them in this forum.

Thank Jeremy,

You says "Is there a reason that you are trying to reference audio instead of embed it in the AAF?". It's a joke ? It's an option of YOUR app. I'm trying to understand !!! And i'm trying to write a decent document to use YOUR app.

So...

The conclusion is the option to reference wav files won't work for 90% of recorder files and 100% of footage from caméra.
Can you confirm that this option has no interest in most of the case (footage has 2 channels or more, recorders records 2 chanels or more, musique is stéréo !!!) ?
Can you give me only ONE concret case where this option is useful ?!

Hope you will consider one day that a document that explain clearly (and in concrete cases) how works X2Pro, is essential for a 150 $ app...

Thank

Martin

I think you might have missed what I said about PCM vs WAV audio.

WAV is always PCM, but PCM isn't always WAV. (e.g. PCM in a MOV is NOT WAV)

When you select the option to "Reference WAV files in Place" in X2Pro, it only references single channel WAV files. There is a second option for the multi-channel WAV files in the Preferences, which we have already mentioned in the second forum topic that you started. However what the option "Reference WAV files in Place" doesn't say or do is reference PCM files in Place.

That option only works for WAV files.

Is there a reason that you are trying to reference audio instead of embed it in the AAF?
Embedding audio creates a single file that is much easier to import into Pro Tools because no relinking is necessary, and it is also easier to move the audio project from one location to another because it's a single file package.

I'm not aware of any cameras that record audio to WAV files (separately to video files).

Thank for thoses answers Jeremy.

I've tried to put in a timeline différent sort of files from différents caméra:

BlackmagicPocket (ProRes 422,linear PCM ), 5D (H264,linear PCM), and (Canon XF 422 50mps, Linear PCM).

None of those files can be referenced... so can you confirm that file from those camera (5D and BMPCC for exemple) can't be référence ?

I think a list of the most common camera whom file can be referenced would be a good thing on your web site !!!
I'm sorry to say that i've spent many time to test things with X2Pro, and the more i test, the more i'm surprised by the lack of documentation and decent help for this 150 $ app.

Thank for your answer about 5D and BMPCC

Answers to your questions

1. There is no size limit to an AAF that I am aware of.
However, If the size of AAF is a problem, you can of course make them smaller by trimming embedded audio with handles. (which is available in our "pro" edition of the application.)

2. WAV is always PCM, but PCM isn't always WAV. If audio isn't PCM, then X2Pro will try to convert it from whatever compressed format it is, to PCM before embedding it in the AAF. We (Marquis) don't know of any lists of cameras and their audio formats.

HI,

Just two short questions:
1. is there a size limite for AAF file ?
2. does PCM is really considered as WAV by X2Pro and is there a list of camera that produces WAV files after their importation in FCP X (or a list of camera that doesn't produce WAV)

Thank for your help
